Altruism and Success

Would you rather be a nice person who focuses on others, or a manipulative and selfish person who gets ahead? Don’t say both.

The way you present two options in life—one altruistic and one selfish and manipulative with success attached, you make it seem like there is no alternative choice in life. That is not the case.

Truly successful people are also altruistic. They have learned to balance being nice with taking care of themselves. Locally we have Mike Lazaridis of Blackberry, University of Waterloo, and Perimiter Institute, estimated in June 2011 to be worth $800 USD. He and his wife have donated hundreds of millions to educational endeavors and are highly respected.

Donald Trump, though he collected billions to his name, cannot be seen as a truly successful person. What he succeeded in was padding his pocket beyond belief and manipulating world politics to get elected president. And alienating the rest of the world.

He was so notorious long before living in the White House that authors of novels were using him fictitiously as an extreme character years before the 2016 American presidential election.

I would rather be a Mike Lazaridis. Or just me, living below the poverty line financially but feeling like a millionaire. I don’t think I want my photo in Wikipedia, or my name on buildings.
