What to call parents

I’m not going to tell you what’s good and bad. If you’re old enough to write that question you’re old enough to figure that out on your own. Here are some thoughts for you to work with.

Every culture, as well as every family, has it’s own traditions in this. What is the tradition of your family? What do your parents wish for you to call them? From your question I get the impression they prefer to be called Mom and Dad, which raises the question: Why don’t you want to call them that?

If you’re a normal person, you yourself have fairly specific preferences regarding who calls you what. For example, you will tolerate names from the boy next door that you find totally unacceptable from a boyfriend, and vice versa. Apples don’t fall far from the tree, which means parents and children tend to have similar values and feelings. Since they’re your parents, honour them with the titles or names kids normally respect their parents with. Give your parents the same privilege you expect for yourself.

Fair enough?
