Lengthening vs Shortening One’s Writing

I find there are two types of writers:

  • those for whom it is easier to lengthen a short writing, and
  • those for whom it is easier to shorten and long writing.

I’m the latter. For some reason I don’t understand I have to write my thoughts down almost stream of consciousness, then figure out the main points and cut the dross, organize it and polish it into a concisely written story.

Others start with a main idea and outline, then fill it out until the characters and setting vibrate with life, sound, and colour.

Which ever type a writer is, it seems to work out in the end if the person persistently stick to it over the long haul.
