Our Baffling Culture

Sarah Bowman, Secular Humanist: studied theology, social work, some philosophy, anthropology

I’m not sure why you think Christians think they feel heaven or hell. I will assume your are a non-Christian who lives outside Christendom, and therefore finds Christian vernacular baffling. There are vivid descriptions in the Bible of both heaven and hell. Some Christians take these descriptions very literally. Sometimes Christians use the terms metaphorically so that when they are feeling very happy they say they feel close to heaven or “I’m in heaven.” When things go badly, they might say, “This is hell!” Afterward, when life has settled down, we might say, “I’ve been to hell and back.”
