God-Directed Evolution

How do the people from various religions, mainly Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists etc accept the theory of evolution?

I am not familiar with other religions beside Christianity. A common reconciliation used by many Christians, but not all, is the belief in God-directed evolution. A wide range of Christian beliefs exist on how the universe came into being.

Some formal positions are:

  • Young Earth Creationism (YEC): the belief that the earth is less that ten thousand years old, and was created in seven twenty-four hour days, as described inGenesis 1 in the Christian Bible. Answers in Genesis is a strong proponent of this position, posting on their website the biblical and theological bases for this belief in an article “Young-Earth Creationist View Summarized And Defended.”
  • Old Earth or Progressive Creationism: the belief that the earth is billions of years old as per science, but was created by God. This is reconciled by substituting geological age for “day.” NW Creation Networks, which describes itself as “A Christian ministry providing Biblically-based education in creation apologetics,” explains the details of the Old Earth Creationism school of thought.
  • Intelligent Design: Developed in the 1980s, ID endeavours to explain evolution via design observed in nature as an alternative to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. The New World Encyclopedia carries a lengthy and detailed article “Intelligent Design” on the development of ID, and some of the controversies surrounding its use as science in schools, complete with Christian and other credits, criticism, and sources.

For more information, you may wish to see Reasonable Faith, which is both the title of a book written by William Lane Craig, his website, and his online discussion forums where ID and the Kalam Cosmological Argument are discussed from an evangelical Christian perspective. Craig “restored to popularity” the KCA from a medieval Muslim philosophy to show that God created the universe.
